Managing Lawyer | Owner
Mat has also recently advised esports players, teams, investors, and event organisers around Australia, as well as his work in advising sporting bodies, teams, athletes, sponsors, and rights holders in the local traditional sports space.
After spending 15 years in the corporate sector in marketing management roles, over the past 8 years + Mat has developed particular expertise in advising clients in relation to sports governance issues, player contracts, and the development of strategy and effective corporate structures for the commercialisation of sports properties and risk mitigation.
Mat holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and a Diploma in Law, and is a member of the Australian & New Zealand Sports Law Association (ANZSLA) and the US based Sports Lawyers Association (SLA), as well as being admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and on the Roll of the High Court of Australia.
Mat also owns and operates an athlete representation business, ‘Sports & Entertainment Professionals‘ – see www.sportsentpro.com for more information on Mat’s services to players and athletes for contract negotiation, career management, and endorsement deals.
Working with Mat
Mat offers clients a flexible and highly personalised service based upon a unique blend of legal and business skills and experiences – more than law.
We know engaging a lawyer is rarely fun, but in his business Mat aims to partner with his clients and work on building long-standing relationships. Mat’s goal is to become a trusted advisor you enjoy working with, not a stereotype you laugh about after the pain of the bill has gone away.
Knowing that there are literally thousands and thousands of lawyers out there, Mat doesn’t want to be the same old lawyer stereotype with inefficient billing and work methods – Mat’s not your average lawyer. Mat runs a lean practice based upon the delivery of value to you, his clients.
As a lawyer, Mat’s philosophy, or approach to law, is pretty simple:
- Be an advocate – solve problems, don’t add to them. Mat can be a ‘sword’, or he can be a ‘shield’.
- Be all about value – Mat works on a fixed fee basis as much as possible and quotes for work based upon an agreed definition of value.
- Build relationships – Mat’s not a “churn-and-burn” lawyer accounting for every 6 minutes of his day (been there, done that, didn’t buy the t-shirt). Mat wants to work with clients who want to work and partner with him – over the long-term.
- Care about my clients – Mat works with fewer clients and provides them with direct access at any time. Mat returns his own calls and emails – not a secretary.
- Be there here to help – otherwise, what’s the point?
After studying law part-time of an evening and on weekends as a mature-aged student from 2003 to 2009, Mat gained his initial legal experience as a volunteer in Community Legal Centres from 2009 to 2013 and by working as a Civil Law Solicitor with Legal Aid NSW full-time over a 2 year period from 2011 to 2013. As a Legal Aid solicitor Mat assisted financially disadvantaged and socially excluded clients to access the justice system so as to understand, enforce, and protect their rights.
These “street law” environments were fast paced and high volume, covering an extremely wide-range of clients and legal issues. Though tough and emotionally taxing, Mat’s initial training in civil law for the community provided a wealth of experiences and developed his legal skills and knowledge in a very compressed time frame.
Mat left community practice with Legal Aid and started his own practice in 2013 under the name, ‘Mathew Jessep Lawyer’. In 2015, the practice was restructured and re-branded to ‘Jessep Entertainment & Sports Lawyers’.
He now offers a unique focus on sports, media, and entertainment law, and more recently esports, from what some may call a boutique practice – we may be small, but we are more proactive, nimble, and creative with our services provided. We aim on delivering big on our service.
With a background also in sales, marketing, and management roles in the corporate sector prior to his legal experience, Mat quickly understands his client’s goals and offers a client-focused service based upon delivering value by providing practical advice and passionate advocacy, towards an effective commercial outcome.
To complete the history lesson, Mat also spent 2 years serving Australia as an Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) from 2001 to 2003.
